QUBINOIX キュビノワ

With only a couple of years under their belts as a band, QUBINOIX (pron. “cube-in-o-wuh”) arrive carrying over two decades of direct experience shaping the landscape of 90s/00s Japanese shoegaze and alternative rock.

Founding members Ichimaki (guitar, vocals) and Tetsu (bass) made the move from the buzzing city lights of Tokyo to the Shizuoka —the prefecture with a population of just under four million known for the majestic Mt. Fuji — entering a new scene with a renewed energy. Both artists had shared a past as members of legendary bands including Coaltar of the Deepers, Soak and BP..

Drawing influence from the huge guitar sounds of J. Mascais and the unwavering layered techniques of My Bloody Valentine, Ichimaki and Tetsu formed QUBINOIX and quietly released their debut EP Cubic Room in 2021. Tapping back into their network of promoters and bookers, the band performed live for the first time the following year at Shinjuku Nine Spices in Tokyo. With more gigs to follow, they’d soon land their current full-time drummer Yuki and begin working on new recordings. Yuki brings with him a ferocious speed and lockstep tightness behind the kit; with a style reminiscent of Rick Buckler (The Jam) and Grant Hart (Husker Du) that elevates the delivery of QUBINOIX’ poppy punk rock sensibilities.

As the band developed its sound throughout 2022, they would continue to open for touring acts such as ASTROBITE (U.S.) and returned to the studio. For their next record, QUBINOIX would trade in their lo-fi My Bloody Valentine-infused riffs for a set of poppier, fuzzy and heartfelt grunge tunes.

After the release of January 2023’s Soleil Doesn’t Look Back EP, QUBINOIX would spend the year turning heads and capturing ears, including those of Living Waters Records in New York. They’ll be releasing the two-song 7” Girls Are Alright by way of “Everyday is Sunday” in Spring of 2024.

The title track finds QUBINOIX upping the energy and delivering a catchy, punky surf rock tour de force that ditches the pedal board for distorted bass licks, and twee cautious singing for a confident vocal presence that won’t be denied. A beautiful, speedy blend of early Cardigans and mid-90s Detroit garage rock.

On the B-side, “Everyday is Sunday” takes us on a five and a half minute journey through the band’s shoegaze roots; driven up against a heavy wall of sound that bleeds into a Teenage Fanclub esque solo; after beautifully crashing to the ground, we’re treated to a layered reprise of epic proportions.
